A new free crochet pattern, the Swirling Leaves Wine Cozy, is a fun project to work up for your holiday gifts. It was a big hit with my testers and as usual they made my work look amazing! I so appreciate them. If you aren’t a wine drinker, the smaller size does work on a bottle of sparkling grape juice or cider.

This is my contribution to Cre8tion Crochet.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Yarn: #2 weight such as Vanna’s Glamour (Purchase here)
Vannas-Glamour

Gauge: Round 4 approximately 1.5 inches; Round 8 approximately 3; Round 10 approximately 3.75

General Supplies:

7 (4.5mm) hook

stitch marker (could even be a piece of yarn)

Stitches and abbreviations: mc – magic circle, sc – single crochet, sc inc – single crochet increase, sl st – slip stitch, sp cl – split cluster, RS – right side, WS – wrong side, sk – skip, ch(s) – chain(s)

Notes:

You could use a heavier yarn and appropriate hook which would result in a larger gift bag rather than a wine cozy.

The beginning chs count as the first dc and ch sp. So a ch 5 is a dc and ch 2.

Make sure you are turning each round in the cluster rounds. Occasionally count your clusters to make sure you aren’t dropping a cluster.

Special Stitches: Tutorial for the special stitches can be found HERE.

Foundation split cluster: work 3dc over stem of dc (beg ch 3 counts as dc) just worked but leaving last loop of each dc on hook, sk two sts, then work 4th dc into next st leaving last loop as before (5 loops on hook), yo and through all 5 loops.

Split cluster: work 3dc over stem of dc just worked but leaving last loop of each dc on hook, then work 4th dc into next ch sp leaving last loop as before (5 loops on hook), yo and through all 5 loops

Last cluster: work 3 dc over stem of dc just worked leaving last loop of each dc on hook, then sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch of round.

  2. […] I love this wine bottle cozy!! I’ve made up my own in the past with some worsted weight held two strands together to create a bulky yarn so that it would be more sturdy. This one was done in a sport weight so definitely not sturdy but the way this is worked up it doesn’t need to be because it clings to the bottle! Just another thing to love about Leah’s patterns, which are amazing by the way if you didn’t already know. I’m able to meet her gauge with no to little issues and her patterns are always very well written and explained 🙂 This pattern is also written for a 750mL and 1.5L bottle.
