Patterns for preemies are near and dear to my heart. I have had 2 nephews who were NICU babies and several friends whose little ones spent time in the NICU. Making hats for these tiny (and sometimes not even quite so tiny) babies can be heartbreaking. So in this post, you will find my free crochet pattern for hats for these little ones. I decided to include newborn in this set to break it down into easier sets and some of the bigger little ones in the NICU need that size as well. These sizes are ones that are very much in need by NICUs.

These hats are very easy to dress up and make fun as my testers did (and seemed to have great fun doing). Sometimes their hat is the only way personality can be expressed by these little ones’ parents.

For the Preemie 10″ size and the Preemie 12″ size, there is an option to add an additional row to make it longer. The additional row makes for a more standard length beanie, which can always be “cuffed” if too long; however, one of my testers, Betty of Butterfly Dreams Crochet and Crafts, spoke with a nurse that has worked in NICU for many years. The shorter length works really well for the little ones who have monitor leads on the head to record brain activity and such. She said these leads are typically placed behind the ears and center base of the skull. And these sizes are the most needed.

I would like to say that using very soft yarn is extremely important when making these hats for the tiny ones. Cotton and bamboo and even acrylic (as long as it is soft) are really good choices. I also recommend checking with your local NICU or charity that provides hats for these little ones to make sure that there are not specific restrictions on donations. A quick test to check if the yarn is soft enough is to rub the yarn along the inside of your wrist. If it irritates your skin there, then it has a good chance of irritating the baby’s head.
