Free Crochet Pattern: Crystal Dreams Potholder

I love creating items that are eye catching and versatile. The Crystal Dreams potholder was designed with this in mind. With simple color changes this potholder changes ‘appearance’, each that I’ve seen completed takes on its own personality! This design is pretty enough to hang for home decor while still being functional as a potholder. I hope you enjoy working, displaying, and using this design; I would love to see your creations!

Crystal Dreams Potholder

Finished size: 7.5” across

Skill Level: Intermediate

Materials:

Worsted Weight #4 cotton: 65 yards main color

                                           30 yards contrast color

 Cotton Yarns from knitpicks.com

I (5.50mm)hook…or size needed so that your work lies flat

 

Gauge: Not terribly important as long as your work lies flat. At rnd 4 – approx. 2.25”, at rnd 5 – approx. 3.75”

 

Abbreviations:

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

FPdc – front post double crochet

FPdtr – front post double treble crochet

st(s) – stitch, stitches

yo – yarn over

FPdtr2tog – front post double treble 2 stitches together

sk – skip

ch – chain

hdc – half double crochet

inc – increase

rnd – round

Special Stitches

FPdtr: yo 3 times, insert hook into desired st, yo, pull up loop (5 loops on hook), *yo, pull through 2 loops* 4 times

FPdtr2tog: yo 3 times, insert hook into desired st, yo, pull up loop (5 loops on hook), *yo, pull through 2 loops* 3 times (2 loops on hook), yo 3 times, insert hook into desired st, *yo, pull through 2 loops* 3 times (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Notes:

  • Ch 1 DOES NOT count as a st throughout
  • Ch 3 DOES count as a st throughout
  • Ch 2 DOES count as a st throughout
  • ALL joins are done in either the first sc or top of ch 3 at beginning of rnd
  • Color changes: change colors in the last step of last st prior to color change

Front:

With main color,

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and ch 2, 7 hdc in circle. DO NOT JOIN (8)

  **Do not tighten magic circle completely at this point, leave it somewhat loose for ease in rnd 3)

Rnd 2: Dc inc in each st around, change to contrast color in last st,  join (16)

**NOTE: Do not sk any sts of rnd 2 in the next rnd

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same and next st, *FPdc around post of hdc from rnd 1, sc in next 2 sts* around, FPdc around post of last hdc from rnd 1, change to main color in last st,  join. (16sc and 8 FPdc)

**NOTE: tighten magic circle fully at this point

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st and next, sc inc next st, *sc in next 2 sts, sc inc* around, join. (32)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 3 sts, *dc inc, dc in next 3 sts* around, change to contrast color in last st,  join (40)

**NOTE: do not sk any sts of rnd 5 in the next rnd

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st and next, FPdtr around post of FPdc directly below, sc in next st of rnd 5, FPdtr around next FPdc below, sc in next 2 sts, *sc in next 2 sts, FPdtr around same FPdc as last, sc in next st, FPdtr around next FPdc below, sc in next 2 sts* around, change to main color in last st, join (40sc and 16 FPdtr)

**NOTE:Last FPdtr will go around same FPdc post as 1st FPdtr of rnd

**NOTE: your piece may want to roll or seem ruffled after this rnd, don’t worry..it will lay back down after the next rnd.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st and each stitch around, join (56)

 **NOTE: you will not add (inc) any sts in this round

Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 6, *dc inc in next st, dc in next 6 sts* around, change to contrast color in last st, join (64)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc inc in same st,  FPdtr2tog around 2 posts of FPdtr below, sk next st of rnd 8, sc in next 6 sts, *sc inc,FPdtr2tog around next 2 posts of FPdtr below, sk next st of rnd 8, sc in next 6 sts* around, change to main color in last st, join (64 sc and 8 FPdtr2tog)

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in same st and next 7, sc inc in next st, *sc in next 8 sts, sc inc in next st* around, join. Fasten off (80)

Back

The backside can be worked in a solid color or striped. If opting to stripe the back, use contrast color on rnds 3, 6, and 9

Rnd 1: Make a magic circle and ch 2, 7 hdc in circle, join in top of ch 2 (8)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc inc in each st around, join (16)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc inc in next, *sc in next st, sc inc in next st* around, join (24)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in same st and next st, sc inc, *sc in next 2 sts, sc inc in next st* around, join (32)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 3 sts, *dc inc, dc in next 3 sts in next st* around, join (40)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st and next 3 sts, sc inc in next st, *sc in next 4 sts, sc inc in next st* around, join (48)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, sc in same st and next 4 sts, sc inc  in next st, *sc in next 5 sts, sc inc* around, join (56)

Rnd 8: Ch 3, dc in same st and next 6 sts, *dc inc, dc in next 6 sts* around, join (64)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st and next 6 sts, sc inc  in next st, *sc in next 7 sts, sc inc  in next st* around, join (72)

Rnd 10: Ch 1 sc in same st and next 7 sts, sc inc, *sc in next 8 sts, sc inc* around, join (80)

        Fasten off

Finishing/Edging

Weave in all ends on front and back.

**See ‘optional hanging loop’ below before working the following**

Holding both pieces with wrong sides together, join with a sc through all 4 loops (both loops of front and back piece), sc in each st around, join with an invisible join, Weave in ends.

***Optional hanging loop***
If you would like a hanging loop on your potholder: follow the joining instructions above, at any point (stitch directly above peak of diamond) do the following: sc in indicated st, ch 12, sl st in same st as last sc, sc in remaining sts around.
